What to Expect During Your Routine Checkup
If visiting the dentist makes you feel uneasy, rest assured that we do our best to make you feel relaxed and at ease. Your comfort is important to us and we’re happy to work at a pace that’s right for you.
During your appointment, our dental hygienist will perform any necessary X-rays, clean your teeth, and give you a fluoride treatment if needed. Then, Dr. Hooks will examine your teeth, gums, and jaw to make sure your mouth is in tip-top shape. If you haven’t been to the dentist in awhile, you may need a dental deep cleaning to successfully remove the built up plaque and debris.
A routine dental checkup and cleaning at Hooks Family Dentistry consists of:
- A Dental Cleaning
- Necessary Oral X-Rays
- Gum Disease, Cavity & Oral Cancer Screenings
- Fluoride Treatment for Adults & Kids (If Necessary)
- Exam and Consultation with Dr. Hooks

Schedule AppointmentWhat are early signs of tooth decay?
Early signs of tooth decay may include white or brown spots on the teeth, increased sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods, and mild discomfort when biting or chewing. As decay progresses, cavities can form, leading to more noticeable pain or visible holes. Regular checkups allow Dr. Hooks to spot decay in its earliest stages, when treatment is most effective and minimally invasive.
How can I prevent gum disease?
The best way to prevent gum disease is through consistent oral hygiene and routine dental visits. Brushing twice daily, flossing once a day, and using an antibacterial mouthwash can help remove plaque before it hardens into tartar. Professional cleanings every six months allow our staff to remove buildup and monitor gum health. Healthy lifestyle habits, like a balanced diet and not smoking, also lower your risk.
Why are my teeth sensitive?
Tooth sensitivity is often caused by exposed dentin, which can happen if enamel wears down or gums recede. This exposure allows hot, cold, or sweet foods to reach the nerves inside your teeth, triggering discomfort. Common causes include tooth decay, grinding, gum disease, or worn dental work. Dr. Hooks can help identify the source and recommend treatments, such as fluoride, bonding, or desensitizing products, to provide relief.
Do you offer same-day appointments?
We typically only offer same-day appointments for dental emergencies, although you’re welcome to give our office a call to see if we have any cancellations and can see you or your child the same day. If you’re experiencing severe tooth pain, a broken tooth, or another urgent concern, our team will make every effort to see you right away. Your comfort and peace of mind are our top priorities, especially when urgent care is needed.
