Do I Need to Replace My Crown?

A dental crown, a common procedure practiced across the country, is a tooth-shaped cap that fits over a damaged tooth typically to restore its size and shape. It also protects the tooth from being exposed to further bacterial damage that can lead to serious infections. Depending on the proper care and the material used, dental crowns can last up to about 10-15 years. After that time, they will eventually have to be replaced. Here are some signs to look out for when determining whether or not a replacement is needed.

Wear & Tear

Over time, your dental crown will eventually wear down. With your teeth rubbing against the crown from constant chewing or perhaps grinding from bruxism, the dental crown will eventually lose its grip. Bad oral hygiene could also cause some wear and tear and invite unwanted bacteria to seep into the damaged tooth that was originally protected by a completely sealed crown. If you notice your crown is loose or cracked, or your bite is abnormal, you’ll want to see your dentist as soon as possible before any further damage occurs to your tooth.

Pain and Swelling

If you are experiencing pain and swelling around the area where you have your crown, it may be that you are dealing with tooth abscess or decay. In such cases, you’ll want to see your dentist immediately to get the crown replaced and the inflammation looked at so that the infection doesn’t potentially spread further and cause neighboring teeth to decay.

Receding Gums

If you’re confronted with receding gums, you might experience discomfort and toothache. When the gums recede, it often exposes the tooth’s roots to outside elements and causes tooth sensitivity, infection, and decay. If you are experiencing any of those, it may be time to replace your crown.

Additionally, when your gums recede, it will often leave a dark line around the base of your crown, giving you a less appealing smile.
